A WIDE-ANGLE LOOK AT SUKKOT
|
CELEBRATIONS TODAY
Today, without the sacrifices of old, Jerusalemites gather en masse at the Kotel (Western Wall) on Sukkot. Others in Israel celebrate in the fields of kibbutzim, and one can see many, many small temporary “huts” (sukkot) dotting the balconies of city apartments and the yards of countryside homes.
Outside of Israel, Jews whose livelihoods do not depend on farming still celebrate the agricultural nature of the holiday. Many people build a sukkah and invite friends and family to eat together under its leafy roof. Chances are that if you drive around areas of your city where Jews live, you'll see sukkot dotting a number of backyards. |
