A WIDE-ANGLE LOOK AT HANUKKAH
|
CELEBRATIONS TODAY
For eight nights, Jews add one light to the hanukkiyah, the special Hanukkah menorah (candelabra). Fried foods are traditionally eaten in honor of the legendary story of Hanukkah that relates that one cruse (bottle) of oil lastest for eight days. Spinning the four-sided top, known as a s'vivon or dreidel, is also part of the holiday fun! Gifts are often part of the celebration, though this custom was adopted mostly because Jews live in a society where gift-giving is part of the holiday season around them.
