A WIDE-ANGLE LOOK AT SIMHAT TORAH

CELEBRATIONS TODAY
On this holiday, prior to reading the Torah, the scrolls are brought out of the aron hakodesh (holy ark) and paraded around, accompanied by singing and dancing. All those in attendance are invited to join in, with children often waving handmade or store-bought flags. This celebration is followed by the reading of the last verses in Deuteronomy (in Hebrew the book is called, D'varim) and the first verses in Genesis (in Hebrew, B'reishit), signifying the Torah's importance and the deep Jewish commitment to continual learning.
